Rhys new Chairman for Wales YFC!!

Advice categories: Other / Young Farmers' Movement

Rhys new Chairman for Wales YFC!!!

Rhys Owen, member of Caernarfon YFC, was duly elected as Wales YFC's Chairman during Wales YFC's Annual General Meeting last weekend. Following a successful and busy year shadowing Mark Williams as Vice-Chairman of the movement, Rhys is now looking forward to the challenges of leading the largest rural youth movement in Wales.

"This is a real honour for me to become Wales YFC's new Chairman," said Rhys. Rhys, 31, works as the Head of Conservation and Agriculture for the Snowdonia National Park Authority and also at home on the family's farm in Llanwnda. He gained a BSc degree in Physical Geography at Aberystwyth University before going on to study a MSc in land management at Bangor.

Rhys has been active in the YFC circuit for many years and is a past Chairman of the Wales YFC Training and Promotions Committee and the Eryri Federation. He has also won the Chair at the Wales YFC Eisteddfod in 2000.

Rhys is looking forward to the year ahead as Chairman,

"I am looking forward to my year in post as chairman and having the chance to make the public appreciate and take notice of the opportunities, talent and the challenges that we as an organisation can offer to the members."

It has become custom for Wales YFC's Chairman to designate a good cause or charity to support throughout the year. This year, the chairman has decided that the organization and its members will support Diabetes UK Cymru.

During the meeting Rhys asked the members to support the cause during the forthcoming year,

"I am sure that you all have family, a friend or a neighbour that suffers from diabetes. It is a condition that is on the increase and is connected with many other conditions that oppress the people of Wales such as heart disease. The problem is huge within children and young people - our membership.

Over a hundred thousand people in Wales suffer from the condition and around fifty thousand others suffer but are unaware. It is a disease that costs 9% of the Wales NHS yearly budget.

Through its membership and activities Wales YFC will work with Diabetes UK Cymru to raise awareness and understanding of the condition amongst children and young people and the wider rural community. It will enable people to discover if they are suffers and give the opportunity for people to change their way of life in order to avoid problems later on in life.

As well as raising awareness, there will be opportunities for members, clubs and counties to raise money if they wish for local projects that are operated by Diabetes UK Cymru".

Joseph Cuff, National Fundraising Manager Wales of Diabetes UK Cymru stated,

"Diabetes UK Cymru are delighted to be chosen as the charity of the year for the Young Farmers of Wales.

Diabetes is a serious chronic condition - an indiscriminate and often silent killer with no cure. It is one of the greatest health challenges faced by the UK today and can affect anyone at any age.

We look forward to working with the Young Farmers and in order to make the most impact within Wales

and provide a powerful, emotive catalyst for fundraising we pledge that funds raised will go to

support people in Wales."

Also during the AGM, Tim John, past county Chairman of Pembrokeshire Federation was elected as Wales YFC's Vice-Chairman for 2009 - 2010.
