Minister announces funding to help make Hay Festival greener

The 21st chapter of the Hay Festival will be kinder to the environment and more sustainable with the help of funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, Environment, Sustainability and Housing Minister Jane Davidson announced on 22 May.

At the start of the internationally acclaimed literature festival, now in its 21st year, Ms Davidson said she was pleased that £30,000 would help to measure the ecological footprint of the Festival and improve its environmental credentials

The funding will be used for the Festival's Greenprint Project to measure its ecological footprint, trial new site management methods and to continue the development and launch a green toolkit that will help it achieve the new British Standard, BS8901 for planning and managing sustainable events.

Ms Davidson said: "I am pleased that the Assembly Government is able to help the festival organisers to measure the footprint of the Festival and improve its sustainability through their Greenprint Project.

"It would be a great achievement if the British Standard could be achieved by the Hay Festival, which would be the first event in Wales to do this since the Standard was launched in 2007.

"Hay and Wales can lead the way and their success can be shared by other event organisers to assist in reducing the ecological footprint of their own festivals"

The Greenprint Project was launched in 2006, to audit, manage and improve the sustainability of the Hay Festival, as organisers became increasingly aware of its impact on the environment. The Hay Festival toolkit gives advice on transport, recycling, energy and water use and packaging among its tips.

Hay Festival organisers said "We are delighted to have the support of the Assembly Government. The Hay Festival has been successful in making changes to the way in which we run the Festival and are striving to become Carbon Minimal. We are keen to share the lessons we learn and also to learn from others and by working with the Assembly Government we know that we can maximise the benefits to all.
