Taken away from Gower's Coastline!

Taken away from Gower's Coastline!

‘Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints'.   The National Trust is one of many environmental organisations that endeavours to deliver this message to visitors to the countryside.  But visitors to Gower have been taking things away with them this summer, and The National Trust have been giving incentives for doing so!

Run at the National Trust Shop and Visitor Centre at Rhossili, visitors and residents on Gower were able to collect a bag of litter from anywhere within the Peninsula.  In exchange for the litter, participants were offered a free ‘eco-jute bag' and entry into a prize draw to win a large ‘eco-Hamper' as part of its ‘Take it Away' Campaign.

Nearly 200 families participated, many returning time and time again to collect waste from different areas around the coastline.  Some families even rounded up the assistance of other visitors and groups to organise large scale collections, and one team from the National Trust headquarters in Swindon, ventured all the way to Gower to do a collection as part of their team building event.

Thanks to the fantastic efforts of all those who participated over 25,000 litres of waste was collected from the coastline, so a significant improvement was made both to the aesthetics of Gower's land and seascape, and the quality of life for its local wildlife.

The Shop & Visitor Centre would like to offer a big thank you to all those who participated in the ‘Take It Away' Campaign.   Leigh Freeman, the Shop & Visitor Centre Manager added ‘I feel passionate about working for The National Trust and proud of the fantastic work that it achieves on Gower. Unfortunately it can't cope with the massive problem that litter presents to its coastline alone, and the charity is only as strong as the people that support it.  The public have made an amazingly positive contribution to our environment this summer and we would like to truly thank every single individual that got involved.'

The Shop & Visitor Centre is now looking at how it can develop the campaign to run again next summer, and would welcome any suggestions that the public may have.

The National Trust Shop & Visitor boasts a fantastic range of Christmas gifts and merchandise, and is open Wednesday to Sunday throughout November and December for Christmas shopping.  All profits generated in the shop are put directly back into the conservation of Gower.

For more details of opening times or to make suggestions about how we can develop next years campaign, contact the Shop & Visitor Centre on 01792 390707.
