- Why Farming Matters
A recent report has shown that 72% of shoppers want to be able to buy British beef and lamb, and 80% believe supermarkets should be offering farmers a fair deal.
In a show of strength to harness consumer support, NFU Cymru has got together with Hybu Cig Cymru / Meat Promotion Wales; the Townswomen's Guild; the Women's Food and Farming Union; the National Council of Women and Farmers Guardian, to do the ‘Why beef and sheep farming matters' campaign which is aimed at raising awareness of the current crisis facing the sector and encouraging people to buy Welsh.
The campaign is calling for a fair price for beef and sheep farmers, who produce the finest quality meat in the world, which is in demand from consumers as never before. But unless price at the farm gate increases, great Welsh dishes
such as a traditional Sunday roast or cawl could have to be made using imported meat.
And with beef and sheep farmer numbers falling in the last ten years, not only will consumers be unable to buy Welsh, but the landscape will suffer as a consequence, with upland landscapes such as Snowdon most at risk from undergrazing and agricultural dereliction.
The situation is a stark one - farmers are producing beef and lamb at a loss and it is simply not sustainable. Lamb prices collapsed last year yet supermarket prices went up - that is simply not acceptable.
Consumers wanting to show their support can:
** Buy Welsh beef and lamb, local where possible, and look out for the Welsh Beef and Lamb quality marks.

Be ddiawl ma'r undebau ac hcc yn gwneud ond mynd ag arian ffermwyr? Oes na dystioleth bod nhw'n cael dylanwad ar yr archfarchnadoedd? Dim ****** owns o ddylanwad. Mae prisiau'r flwyddyn ddiwetha' ma wedi dangos hynny'n blaen. Unwaith daeth Traed a'r Genau ac yna y Tafod Glas ( a mae rhaid gofyn y cwestiwn sut daeth rhain i'r amgylchedd?) fe gwmpodd y pris i ni'r ffermwyr dros nos. Dylanwad yr undebau a HCC - DIM. Nawr mae stoc mwy prin a hyn yn unig oherwydd fod wyn o Seland Newydd yn brin yna mae'r pris wedi codi - ond fi'n siwr pobl y siwtiau yn Aberystwyth a Llanelwedd yn "chest" i gyd am eu gwaith rhagorol yn achub y diwydiant unwaith eto. Diolch am ddim byd! A beth am bris gwrtaith. Dros £300/t a tro hyn Tsieina sy'n cael y lach, falle mae fi sy'n granc ond pan mae'r llywodraeth yn gadael i'r ddau gwmni fertilizer mwyaf i uno, a cael gwared o bob cystadlaeth yna oes na falle siawns fod y cwmni mawr yma yn dwyn mantes? Na byth, dim ond cwmnioedd laeth fydde'n gwneud pethe felna!!! Felly digon teg i Dai Davies ( ac mae parch mawr 'da fi at Dai) i sôn am addysgu'r cyhoedd ond y gwir yw tra bod na gwmnioedd enfawr yn rheoli dros bob rhan o'r diwydiant a rhain yn cael ffafriaeth gan y llywodraeth yna cost yw'r sefydliadau hefyd.
